Principles of communication allow us to:
  • Know what we feel, without confusing it with what we think.
  • Understand what we value, and why that value is driving our feelings and responses.
  • Determine what we need in a situation. Know how to invite others to meet that need.  (This is very different from blaming others for not meeting our needs.)
  • Know how to make sure both of you are "on the same page" and truly talking about the same thing, seeking the same goal.
  • Avoid words that will dis-connect us from the “heart of the matter”.
  • Be fully present in the situation without being overwhelmed, or worrying.

Principles help us speak and act with clarity and honesty. Others can trust that we are able to connect with empathy and concern, and that increases mutual understanding.
