Don and I have 11 children, and have been married for 43 years. Our oldest son passed away just before he was a year old. We have dealt with many kinds of issues: adoption challenges, emotional health challenges, relationship challenges, economic challenges, many parenting issues, and physical and health challenges. Don served in the National Guard for 40 years, and he was deployed to Iraq as part of our experience too.
About 30 years ago now I (Janet) realized that I needed to understand emotions if i was going to be able to deal with challenges we faced. As I began searching for solutions to emotional health issues, I realized something that changed my life. There were all kinds of products, books, classes, seminars, workshops, and information available, but many ideas conflicted with each other. Often I found products that sounded wonderful, but they claimed to reveal the “secret formula,” and they came with corresponding “secret prices.” Many times it was more about marketing than actual information. Experts contradicted each other. Some of the information didn’t align itself with my core religious beliefs. Other products completely eliminated any possibility of God, and claimed that it was all about YOU, and what you would attract in life - independent of needing any spiritual help. I found a lot of products that claimed they had all the answers.
There seemed to be a huge new idea with this type of label:
Create the life you want and deserve!
Attract the life you really want!
That bothered me (and still does), because it implies that we are not already able to be at peace in the life we have, and that we are doing something wrong, or not trying hard enough. In short, it was confusing!
How would I be able to figure out my emotions?
How could I figure out how to deal with others in extremely challenging relationships?
How could I sift through all the information (and misinformation) to determine what was really going to help?
I knew that emotions impacted us. I could see it in issues my family faced. I could also see it due to some extreme bullying that I went through while I was going to junior and senior high school. I knew emotions had impacted my life greatly. As I learned to do Craniosacral Therapy and Heart-Centered Therapy for others, I realized more and more how much emotions impacted our lives and our bodies. I began to realize this truth:
Principle: Emotions power our lives.
It was at this point that I realized that what I needed were principles. I needed to be able to organize my thinking in terms of truths that would always be true and never change. Just like gravity is always true, and will always affect us, principles are always true, and will always impact us. I didn’t need advice, or someone telling me how to solve my problems. What I needed was to understand principles, and then seek information and help that would line up with truths that I already knew were correct. I realized with shock, that everything in life depended on ME learning to understand ME.
These are not religious principles - although they do line up in accordance with religious belief. They are simply ideas that are timeless, about how to treat others, how to treat ourselves, and how to understand the emotions that we have.
Now - years later - our children are grown. We have seen how learning to understand principles has dramatically helped our family. We have experimented over and over with using principles to help us resolve hard situations. They have never failed. Don and I have both taught classes about how understanding these principles will lead to peace. It is my passion, and my life’s mission to teach these things.
We are not fancy. This is a “shoe-string” operation, but it is one that is definitely heart-felt. I encourage you to really think about these things. As you do so, you will be led to the solutions that suddenly become visible and you will recognize that. That will help you feel peace. Please feel free to share these ideas with others. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all unite under principles? I believe this is possible, and so very important.
Sincerely,
Janet
