Teaching Self Government
Start with the end in mind. That is something that we might forget as parents. But consider: When your children leave home, what do you want the end result to be?
Initially, that was a hard question. I wanted my children to be secure, confident, capable adults -- but I couldn't put my finger on exactly what needed to happen in order for them to "become that." When I attended my first "Teaching Self Government" workshop, something clicked. I could see that I needed to teach my children how to govern themselves. If someone can govern themselves, they can be secure in any situation, because they will act, not react. They will be confident, because they understand how to work with the laws of cause and effect. They will be capable, because they will have had many opportunities to solve problems and work through situations. The exciting part was this: I could teach them the skills they needed to know!
I found "Teaching Self Government" at a point in our family's experience when we were dealing with some critical behavioral issues. I couldn't find the right "strategy" for discipline, and I assumed discipline was what I needed. "Teaching Self Government" completely transformed our home. Learning to teach four basic simple skills improved everything in our home. I didn't think of it as discipline any more. I simply thought about what skills still needed to be taught. Everything I was doing was based on true principles and laws, and I didn't have to wonder what to do. For the first time, I felt confident and capable as a parent.
I invite you to learn more about "Teaching Self Government." This isn't another parenting method. It's a principle-based approach to teaching skills that will allow greater connection, peace, and love to be in your home.
