When my child asks to go see a movie that has a rating or content that  I do not agree with, I am not going to say, “Yes, go see it.  Come home, tell me how you feel about it, and we’ll see if you think watching movies like that is good for you.

  • I am going to say, “ Let’s talk about principles.  Let’s talk about what that rating means. Let’s talk about what we know about our family standard, and talk about why we have chosen to live by that family standard.  Let’s talk about why it is important to have standards in regards to things that we put into our minds.   (Learn more about how to create a family standard here.
  • I would make sure that my children understand what I call (and teach) about “The Gardening Principles.”  If I want to plant a garden,I must first choose what to plant.  Choosing what to watch in a movie is literally “planting” seeds of what we will think about.  It should be very important to carefully think about why that matters.
Movies matter.  Plain and simple.  What we put in (plant) matters to what we harvest as “fruit” later in life.
